truck2019 Ram 3500 dually 6.7 Cummins, 40 ft PJ gooseneck
got laid off from a fab shop in Sand Springs in october. i have a 2019 Ram 3500 dually, 6.7 Cummins, 4.10s, 92,000 miles, paid off. a buddy is selling me his 40 ft PJ gooseneck flatbed with dovetail and ramps.
everybody i talk to tells me something different about the license. one guy says you need a Class A for anything over 26,000. another says not if you keep the trailer rated low. another says it does not matter if you are not for hire. i do not want to spend money on a CDL i do not need, and i really do not want to get put out of service at a scale in Texas because i read the rule wrong.
truck GVWR on the sticker is 14,000. the trailer tag says 24,000. what am i looking at here?

add those two GVWRs together. 14,000 plus 24,000 is 38,000. a combination rated above 26,000, pulling a trailer rated above 10,000, used for business, puts you in Class A territory. it does not matter what you actually weigh on a given day, it goes off the ratings.
i run cattle for my own operation and there are farm exemptions that apply to me that will not apply to you once you take money for hauling somebody else's freight.
some hot shot guys run a trailer that has been rated down so the combination stays under 26,001 and skip the CDL. you give up a lot of what you can haul to do that, and the trailer has to actually be rated that way, not just say so. with a 40 ft trailer you will want the weight.

go straight to the source on this, the FMCSA site has the registration steps and the definitions. anything above 10,000 lbs used in interstate commerce needs a USDOT number. hauling for hire across state lines needs operating authority, the MC number, on top of that. and you will need a DOT medical card.
once you register that combination over 26,000 you are into IFTA fuel tax reporting too, quarterly. i have watched people at the port of entry in Cheyenne get parked because they figured the pickup made them exempt from all of it. it does not. from the inspector's side of the window you are a commercial vehicle with a pickup bed.

my brother in law hot shots out of Temple. two things he would tell you. first year insurance with new authority was the number that nearly made him quit, well over twelve thousand for the year, because no underwriter likes a brand new MC number. second, he leased onto a carrier for his first year and ran under their authority and insurance. less money per load, but he learned the work without betting the truck on it.
january is slow, too, so expect the rates to be ugly right when you start.

this is the clearest answer i have gotten in six weeks. so the plan is: get the Class A anyway, there is a CDL program at a school here that runs four weeks and i start the 8th. DOT physical next week. lease onto a carrier out of Broken Arrow that runs a lot of oilfield and pipe to West Texas, and see if i even like it before i spend money on my own authority.
the trailer stays at 24,000.

from the shop side, since you are about to put 100,000 miles a year on a pickup: that truck is going to wear out on a schedule now, not whenever.
oil on the severe duty interval in your owner's manual, not the oil life monitor guess. both fuel filters on time, more often if you fuel at a lot of small stations. front end parts on a dually that runs loaded every day, tie rods and ball joints, get looked at every other oil change. brakes on the trailer, not just the truck, because DOT will check them.
and keep the emissions system stock. a commercial pickup that gets inspected at the scales and is missing a DPF is a citation and an expensive fix, and every carrier you lease to will ask.

passed the Class A on the 9th. three loads so far on lease, pipe to Odessa twice and a skid steer to Wichita Falls. powerstroke_loyal was right, january rates are bad, i saw a lot of loads under a dollar sixty a mile on the board. but the truck is paid for and the trailer is paid for, so it is still working.
